Kindly Mirrors Exhibit Goes to Roanoke

Our 2023 exhibit, Kindly Mirrors, has traveled to several locations and is now on display at the Roanoke History and O. Winston Link Museums in Roanoke. This exhibit of photos by Richard and Gertrue Vest Shank depicts their family and friends, their farm and family outings, providing a fascinating look into life in rural Appalachia from 1912-1917.

We invite you to attend a gallery talk at the Museum by Ricky Cox, Alice Slusher, and Catherine Pauley from the Old Church Gallery. This will take place on September 19, 2026 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. A reception will follow the talk. The talk will include background on how the Old Church Gallery acquired the photographs, how the digitization process was done, and the Vest and Shank families and the Floyd area just over 100 years ago.

The talk and reception is free for members of the Historical Society of Western Virginia; $5 for non-members. Please call 540-982-5465 to RSVP for the talk and reception.
