George Akers Rib Basket
PeopleMaker/Creator: George Akers
PlacesFloyd (Alum Ridge District)
- Diameter (ear-to-ear): 11 inches
- Diameter (opposite): 9 inches
- Height of weaving: 4 inches
- Height with handle: 7 inches
The handle of this rib basket is unusual in that it has extra rods with figure-eight lashing which continues around an extra upper rod on the rim . This is both decorative and practical as the extra weaving protects the rim and handle. The bottom of the basket shows it has been well-used with staining and worn weavers.

This basket was given to George Akers’ grandson Arnold Hammond in the 1960s.
