Description

This full-size bedspread is crocheted from white cotton thread in hexagonal “motifs” which form stars when joined with neat “over and over “stitches. The maker crocheted and joined 256 separate motifs, then finished the spread with a crocheted picot edging. Popcorn stitches add dimension to the top of the spread (featured image shows both sides of the spread). The bedspread does show some signs of wear with a small section of the picot edging having separated from the motifs.

Bio Sketch

This spread was purchased at the estate sale for Clovis and Roxie Boyd. While Roxie Boyd was skilled at crocheting, family members were not certain whether she made this piece or whether it had been given to her.

Notes

A similar Popcorn Star pattern was featured in a 1938 booklet Bedspreads Book No. 122. This was a publication of the Spool Cotton Company which sold for ten cents.
