Description

The twenty-four blocks set block-to-block in this quilt are roughly 22 inches square. The blocks are hand-pieced using random shapes of cloth. There is no batting layer. At least nineteen different embroidery stitches have been used (worked in both cotton and wool threads). Most of the blocks have botanical motifs and one has a lucky horseshoe. One block is dated “May 7.th 1897;” while other blocks contain initials, “M.S.” and “C.G.S.” leading to speculation that this may have been created to commemorate a wedding.
