Description
This sweet little basket was woven from white ash splits. It has a square base, crossed lashing on rim (partially missing), and a notched white oak handle (ends visible on underside of base). After the weaving was completed, repeating designs (blossoms formed of black dots with green stripes and rows of dots )were painted on the sides of the basket.

Iowa Haynes did not have children of her own but helped her sister take care of her four children. In this photo, Iowa is standing behind her husband Monroe Haynes (likely seated on a handmade Griffith chair) with several members of her extended family gathered around them.
