Hilda Harmon Book Signing – Saturday, September 28

Hilda Harmon has just published a children’s book entitled The Little Girl Who Loved Names, which is based on her childhood memories of growing up in Check in the 1930s. Her grandfather owned a grist mill there, her mother ran the general store, and her father built a canning factory that was the major employer in the community. Among the gifts her mother instilled in her youngest child are a love for reading and beauty, both of which continue to sustain Hilda at age 94.

Years ago she signed up for an art class Catherine Pauley was offering as a fundraiser for the Old Church Gallery. One of the pieces Hilda completed was this “Grandma Moses” style painting of her childhood home. Hilda’s book shares her remembered moments with her dearest childhood playmates and pets. Her words bring readers along whether she’s up in her apple tree or creating monster fingers from trumpet vine blossoms.

Everyone is invited to a Book Signing & Author’s Reception at the Old Church Gallery on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, from 1:00 to 2:30. We hope to see you there!

A limited number of copies of The Little Girl Who Loved Names are now available for purchase at the Old Church Gallery (also from Amazon).

One of the illustrations from the book:

The family woodshed had a Ben Davis apple tree next to it.
Hilda didn’t care for the apples, but loved climbing the tree and checking on her pet pig Topsy.
